Hmmm, this was enjoyable and charming, but was that the whole point?
And I liked the main character but also found her annoying.
It is a coming of age novel so I should have loved it because I love those, but I’m kind of “meh” on the whole book.

I grumped and hurrumphed my way through the first 50 pages or so of this book, keeping a running tally of times that I felt the book was too shallow, too neat, the main character to easily given new adventures. But all at once I fell in love. I'm not sure what it was exactly, probably something about the tremendous good will with which the author was clearly writing. I adored this and look forward to reading more Colwin.

This book has a good premise but the character is jumbled as she searches through life. None of the supporting characters are well developed; they are light comedy characterizations. It is a pleasant read with some good insights. I’m disappointed that they don’t add up to more.
There are some editorial inconsistencies that make one wonder if they are errors or intentional. Geraldine’s mother dates Geraldine’s pregnancy relative to Christmas - but they are Jewish. She gets hired at the agency three days a week but talks about going every day.

I really enjoy Laurie Colwin's writing; and was not disappointed here. Geraldine, the main character, is someone who is always questioning what she is doing and what she has done; she is always trying to examine her own life from the outside. I could really relate to this, and it made for a thoughtful narrative, told by Geraldine herself. Finding little aim and ambition in her life as a graduate student, Geraldine goes on tour as the only white backup singer for a couple of black rock'n'roll vocalists. She has mixed feelings about this part of her life, which spill over into her later employment as a music researcher in Harlem, her marriage, and motherhood. There are plenty of questions, and not many answers, in this book. And that's why it's so good.

Nice light story.
I kept waiting for something big to happen and it didn't — nicely insightful into how it feels to not identify as any one thing and how that impacts diffrent stages of life (college, first career, in relationships/marriage, and becoming a mother).
A bit boring — a lovely sunny day read.

I don't remember much about this one. I just know I wasn't blown away by it and I think I didn't like the ending either.
