This was a difficult read. The stories told held a lot of weight and history and emotion. Politics, racism, turf wars, human rights. It was worth reading but it was also difficult.

Urrea is one of my very favorite writers and this volume of thirteen short stories did not disappoint. Each story is its own beautifully crafted jewel, but threads of loss, boundaries, things not being entirely what they seem and the importance of music thread through the collection. Urrea is usually labeled a LatinX or Mexican American writer, but he has a fierce streak of indigenous awareness and pride from his heritage and that shows up here regularly as well. Highly recommended.

Every story widened my view of the world a little bit. I love his writing.
