This was a heavy but uplifting read. Dava Shastri’s last day is acmulticultural story about family, the choices we make consequences behind those decisions and what legacy will this person leave behind after passing away. There’s dual timelines throughout the story: one following the Shastri clan learning about the recent news of their mother and Dava’s past. Dava is obsessed of what people will think about her when she’s gone.

This book felt like it was about so many different things. Was it about Dava dying? Kinda. Was it about her cheating? Possibly. Was it about adoption? Sometimes. Was it about a strong family? A little. Was it about powerful women? Maybe. Was it about sibling bonds? Probably.
Too many things were occurring and by the end of the book I didn’t feel like any of it was even completely seen through or resolved. It felt anticlimactic and uneventful, though I could tell it was trying to be both of those things. And it focused on some weird things. Like how fluffy her bed was in the beginning. And at one point Rev bit his lip until it bled and I thought that was a weird detail too lol.
Just overall not my favorite and I wished it had lived up to the hype.

Rating: 4 stars

This book has a seemingly well-trodden premise but I was intrigued. While I feel like it was overly long and meandered at times, the ending was strong and emotional. Dave Shastri may not be a character you like, but you can relate to her in many ways and you can understand her choices, even if you don’t always agree with them. I did find the children a little one note and stereotypical in the beginning but they did gain some complexity and nuance in the second half. Overall, this book was a touching read, and a fascinating interrogation of the idea of legacy, personal, public and professional.

was pleasantly surprised by this book — good prose, engaging, mysterious — not perfect but a refreshing take on the multigenerational novel without the excessive characters or unnecessary POV changes. i liked each character’s imperfections as well.
