I ended up loving this book. The characters were so multidimensional, as were the family dynamics. Additionally, I felt like the book held a magnifying glass up to so many aspects of life (family, grief, ambition, privilege, charity, and public perception, just to name a few).

Really well written, loved learning more from Indian perspective, got to experience all characters and their growth, slowly learned to fall in love with Dava, a unique storyline

A little overwritten, but still an enjoyable read. It reminded me of The Westing Game, although the cast of supporting characters here is nowhere as strong as the characters in that novel. When the narrative focused on the Shastri kids and grandkids, I found myself impatient to return to Dava. But Dava herself was so interesting and rich — in terms of character, not money (but that too) — that her portions of the narrative successfully carried the whole novel. Special shout-out to the two true romantics who found themselves drawn to the fascinating woman: Arvid and poor old Tom Buck.

Despite how long it took me to finish this book, I really loved it. It was a long, deep dive into the last days of a woman's life, but also that life period. I love a good celebrity book, and while I usually prefer those to be romances, this was so sweeping and had multiple POVs so I truly loved it. You get inside every adult Shastri's head, and I really loved exploring the different aspects of them and their lives, but Dava especially. This would make an amazing limited series, and I hope I get to see it made.
Highly recommend if you like big epic family stories, but also an exploration of a person's life at the end.
