Not a very satisfactory ending (ending was too convenient) but otherwise I loved it. 5th book was better than the 6th one. I gave 5 stars for the 5th book and 4 stars for the 6th book. 5th was probably the best one since it gives the backstory of Rendell Locke and his friends, also the backstory of the locks and keys in Lovecraft mansion. Overall a great horror series. Even though I am a chicken when it comes to horror, I did okay with this series. I guess I am more scared of the movies because of the sound effects. Books don’t scare me that much.
4 stars for the entire series. Definitely one of the best graphic novel series I have read so far. The artwork was great too.

A lot of things were left unexplained at the end. How did Dodge get trapped in the well? Wasn’t Luke already killed? Then how did the demon possess Luke’s body, even though it lay rotting in the water filled cave? What is it with that wellhouse? Rendell’s mom appeared there and then Rendell himself at the end? What kind of magic is that and why do they vanish if they get out of wellhouse? How did Bode come back? How did he get into his body again? I have way too many questions about the ending, which is why I am not entirely satisfied with the ending.

This is it. The end of Locke and Key. It was a hell of a journey, and now that I'm at the finish line, I have to agree that this might be the greatest thing Joe Hill has ever written.

Joe and his partner in crime Gabriel Rodriguez have definitely saved the best for last. The fifth volume of this series is jam packed with revelations about the origins and history of Keyhouse and the keys, while the sixth brings the present day story to a pulse pounding conclusion.

My only quibble with this final pair of volumes is with the fifth one. I do wish, in hindsight, that the revelations in this book had been interspersed throughout the story - at least enough of them for readers to keep up with the plot. What Tyler, Kinsey and we the readers see with the time shift key informs practically every little detail of what's been going on.

Most importantly, it's only now that Dodge's motives make sense. He talks about the omega key a lot, but it's weird that we had to wait this long to finally find out what the omega key's function was and why he wanted it.

Meanwhile, as much as I enjoyed the previous pair of volumes, they were pretty light on plot. I enjoy every second I get to spend with the Locke family, but it sure felt like the series was spinning its wheels a bit.

That quibble aside, though, I don't know what else to tell you. Locke and Key is brilliant. Go and read it right now.

It's a tough thing to build a story around something mystical or esoteric. The answer or origin to something is often the least interesting part of the story and it might be as interesting as you imagined it when it was still ambiguous. Here though, the origin of the keys and how everything comes together for the ending is actually the best bit.

Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez Volume 3 shows many tear-jerking and heartwarming moments in this darkly supernatural series. Something about Rufus telling his mom, "I just want the commander to know if she's ever tired of me, the team will move out at her command. Say the word," i.e. that he'll leave her if he's a burden to her, " seems to have that extra sense of tragedy. Also, the saddening backstories of Ben and Miranda's past were hard to sit through.

The demon possessing the character of Dodge is one nightmare-fueled monster, unlike any character I've come across! Whether he's in the guise of an average person or a grotesque skull reflection. Sam also counts. In an interview, Joe Hill stated that the key to origin horror was "…to push the limits psychologically...to bring the heroes, and the reader, into an uneasy, uncomfortable place, and force them to live there a while." He seems to be working pretty well. Towards the end, it does have a bittersweet tone, but it gives you hope as the reader to enjoy life while you're still present.

The final two volumes of Locke & Key had me saying "holy shit" at every second page. The first volumes were good, but this last edition takes everything to a whole other level. All the pieces come together in unexpected, interesting ways, every character undergoes amazing arcs that'll have you liking them all by the end, and the action becomes movie-blockbuster-level insane mixed with brutal gore that makes for truly harrowing scenes. Really, this ending takes what I thought was a pretty cool story about magic keys and makes it something special. With no loose ends in sight by the last page, this story is well worth a read.

4.5 rounding up. I love this series and it was long enough between reads that the second time around still had some plot points I forgot. Is the series perfect? no, but it is still fantastic. I love the characters (mostly), the suspense, the directions the story takes, and the interesting lore. There is a lot of questions I have about the keys and other plot points but still worth the read.
