I feel like I say this about every book but yeah… this one started out promising but then quickly declined. I liked the writing, the prose, cool power system, initially thought the resurrection plot was so interesting. I liked the idea of the MC a lot more than how she was executed, because she was headstrong to the point of annoying and defiant to the point of stupidity. Every interaction with the prince ended in her exploding in anger that it was almost comical.
Speaking of the prince, he was a loser, so much so that I had trouble believing his moments of intelligence. I get what the author was going for but I did not find him endearing in the slightest and the romance was icky.
The cousins annoyed me to hell, but the ending was interesting. If I liked the cousins I think the ending would have set up a really cool premise that I would be interested in exploring. As it stands, I will not be continuing the series. Finally, yeah, there is no way they solved all of china’s problems in like an hour. THAT was unrealistic and ridiculous.

I loved the historical aspect of this book, and felt attached to all the characters. While there were parts where the main character was kind of annoying, I was still rooting for her and felt like she was very real. Overall, I felt like it was very well written beginning to end.
I really enjoyed this book so much, perhaps more so thanks to the audiobook narration (there's something about Natalie Naudus' voice and intonation that I love).
It fully transported me to imperial China and had me on a gold chokehold.
That ending, though!

"There was always a reason to say It's not my fault. Why should I have to pay? But if no one paid, this would never end."
That ending was crazy. Complete 180.
Anyway, I kind of liked this book? 3.75 stars? I think the romance between the prince and Zilan was a bit too insta-love like for me? I mean if I think about it they did indeed spend quite some time together, but I feel like they just didn't have enough heart-to-hearts for it to evolve into the kind of love where both of them would do anything for the other.
I loved the themes of family and the gap between rich and poor. Though I think the book addressed the latter a bit too superficially. I know it was important for the ending, and the book did it reasonably well, but it didn't wow me either.
