DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 202 pages

Again this held my attention while I was reading, but I never picked it back up and don’t really have any intention of finishing

Started out as a really interesting world and concept. But the main challenge of thw book was lacking. And the depth of the characters relationships felt shallow.

this book was so good. i immediately wanted to pick up the second. the beginning gave me full metal alchemist vibes at first but went an interesting direction. i enjoyed the historical aspect, and that the notes at the end connected the dots to the individuals the inspired the characters. overall a fun read, and I will be reading the second soon!

Alchemical gold keeps the wealthy young forever, but it doesn’t mean they can’t die.

Zilan is broke and wants more than anything to provide for her family by becoming a royal alchemist, something that won’t be possible without the funds required for exam fees and travel.

Good thing Zilan is just a tiny bit morally gray and doesn’t mind doing illegal resurrection magic for spoiled nobles willing to pay.

Zilan makes it to the royal city and quickly realizes her dream may have been more than she bargained for.

The Scarlet Alchemist is one of the coolest books I’ve read in a long time.

What I loved…
- badass FMC that will stop at nothing to achieve her goals and protect her family
- an MMC that is attracted to the FMC for her brains before her beauty
- quirky side characters that you can’t help but love
- Durian the duck

I'm so annoyed at this book. It was so good but also bad at the same time. I wasn't intending to continue with the series, but the ending completely changed that.

I love world building and info dumping in books, but it wasn't done well in this story. The beginning started off strong, but then it became a chore to read. I was tempted to DNF, but I set myself a challenge to read every Fairyloot book that I got this year. I am glad that I continued reading it, but I am disappointed. The story sounds amazing, the idea is incredible, but it was certainly a challenge to read. I couldn't connect with the main character, and even at the end I'm not sure that I like her (honestly I wanted to read way more about Yufei). think this would have been easier to read, the world building would have been written better, and the plot would have progressed more if this wasn't written in 1st person. I think a lot more could have been done with the main characters backstory.

I've seen a lot of reviews that say the book gets better after the halfway point, and I definitely agree with this. It's a shame the first half let's it down.

I can't say that I'm excited for the next book, but the ending was really interesting so I'm curious as to what will happen next.
