I came across this title when looking for media that could be called similar to The Apothecary Diaries - since I’m not able to start that series yet - and this definitely hit the spot. Definitely darker than AD, but Zilan feels reminiscent enough of Maomao that the recommendation feels accurate.
The last few chapters knocked me on my ass and I’m going to be picking up the sequel on my way home today.

Disappointing :/ It was compelling enough for me to keep reading, but the plot was… strange. Every little action sequence was so short and so sudden it really lacked that gripping, tense feeling. People kept trying to kill her, but from the way it was written, you’d think she was swatting a fly. And the love interests and the friendships and the siblings… none of the relationships, the level of love at least, was realistic to me. There were more scenes of people trying to kill her than her actually bonding with any of the other characters. And when I thought she might actually learn something and be forced to see death as permanent when those characters died, she chooses to just bring all of them back instead regardless. What happened to everyone you love will be killed by you in 4 years? Clearly, nothing. Just so strange.
I liked that the villain was not easily fooled though and that she was as ruthless as her reputation, but it would’ve packed more of a punch if the writer cared to make some of those characters she killed actually stay dead.
And why in the WORLD would she bring back her brother over her first love, IN HER FIRST LOVE’S body????!!! You cannot tell me there were no other bodies to use, fucking hell.

Daaaaaannnnnngg. This was a good book. The setting was amazing, the characters were a good mix, and the romance was pretty good! The twists were good, and the villain was beautiful! The struggle, the drama, it was a pretty solid read, and I am excited for the next one!

Great writing, strong story. I enjoyed most of the book, the last couple of chapters tool a turn and ruined the rest of the book for me personally. Other than that I'd say it was decent. I just won't be picking up the 2nd one!
