The Great Spruce by Rebecca Gibbon, John Duvall

Alec loves climbing trees - especially his favorite big spruce that his Grandpa transplanted when he was young. Now, the tree is so large that it attracts the attention of some men from the city who ask if they can take it for the city's Christmas tree. Alec's parents agree, but Alec is determined to keep his tree alive. He asks the men if they can "borrow" the tree instead of cutting it down, by transplanting it.

The end matter has an interesting bit about how they used to use live transplanted trees in Rockefeller Center.

This is just charming. The illustrations are loose and bright, and the story is heartwarming. It tells the tale of a Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, back when the trees were transplanted in NYC.

Worked well in my Christmas tree storytime for a 3-5 year old group. The art is fun- the kids liked that the dog came along with the family. Nice little message about conserving our natural treasures as well.

I have, in recent years, fretted quite a bit about the huge coniferous tree that has been cut each year to adorn Rockefeller Center at Christmastime. This well-written book gives a grand message about ecology without being preachy. Cleverly done, Mr. Duvall! I loved the illustrations, they reminded me of some of the Golden Books I read as a child. Not just for Christmas, but for the whole year through.

Great illustrations in this one! A great non-religious pick for the holidays.
