4 stars. a decidedly solid novel, You-Jeong Jeong's writing shines in how she takes us into the mind of a twisted individual and rationalises his actions accordingly. a pattern i love in many East Asian novels is that the characters involved always seem to be so strange, whether in their habits, lifestyle, in the events of the plot or even when responsible for murder. Yu-jin is truly a character in his own right that you can't help but pity and resent, all at once.

This book is unhinged, in an appropriate way. The premise was strange yet believable for a thriller - a man wakes up and finds the apartment bloody and mom is dead. And as he goes and pieces together exactly what happens, we soon find that not all what it seems. Most of the story is told in the apartment, with a few flashbacks to other locations. The use of limited scenery and characters was effective in setting the creepy almost claustrophobic tone to the story. Overall a very enjoyable, easy to read book.

The ending was kind of wild, but also very Korean drama-esque. And after watching The Glory, I can see Lee Dohyun playing the main role, iykyk.
