This book, for me, started out strong and only grew stronger as the plot unfolded. The author did a good job of adding new questions/mysteries just as old ones got wrapped up. I can’t say I like the ending per se, but it was the most fitting ending based on the plot and themes, and for that I salute the author.
I meant to read something light and fun on a lazy Saturday afternoon and ended up reading this instead, which may explain my less-than-enthusiastic response. This is one of those psychological thrillers where the "thriller" part comes not from wondering what's going to happen next, but seeing what's going to happen next and trying to figure out how the story is going to get there from here. I'm generally a fan of such things, but unfortunately the book leans heavily on the "psychological" part of the book and that part is not especially interesting. On the plus side, by the time I realized I was bored of the story and just wanted to find out how it ended, I was already halfway through this tiny volume and so it wasn't that difficult to get to that ending, which was actually decently believable so plus ten points to Jeong for sticking the landing.

Si legge questa frase in uno dei momenti centrali del libro. Certamente in quello che è uno dei passaggi più importanti della narrazione stessa. Yu-jin, con le sue cuffiette, esce di casa, ed il motivo lo comprende perfettamente.
Dopo il prologo la storia inizia senza giri di parole, l'immagine che ci si ritrova davanti ha dell'inquietante, e le domande che il lettore inizia a porsi non tardano ad arrivare. Yu-jin è coperto di sangue, e ne trova tracce ovunque, cerca di capire come sia possibile, e con quello che diviene un vero e proprio viaggio negli inferi e nella sua psiche, scopre cosa ha fatto, come sia successo e perché. Lo fa andando per vere e proprie tappe, come se ci fosse una sequenza logica minuziosamente decisa, e lui ci accompagna in questa selva oscura. Mentre ritorna sui suoi passi, oltre le tragiche scoperte che fa riguardo le sue azioni, scopre anche il vero sé stesso.
La narrazione è fatta in prima persona, quindi il punto di vista è quello del protagonista, che si rivela come un vero e proprio antieroe. All'inizio viene quasi indotto il lettore ad empatizzare con lui, ma subito dopo si comprende come questo non sia possibile, perché la verità arriva molto presto e il quadro diventa molto più chiaro.
Una caratteristica che va davvero a vantaggio di questo thriller è la fluidità di come gli avvenimenti vengono narrati. Tutto è fortemente schematico, ma non si percepisce lo stacco tra i diversi episodi, Yu-jin è come se accompagnasse il lettore tra quello che è il presente e quello che è il rievocare il passato secondo un punto di vista nuovamente trasformato, e visto da lui stesso con occhi diversi dato che ha compreso in qualche modo la sua ''vera natura''. Ci sono momenti dove si ha voglia di leggere le pagine ad una velocità estrema, perché la carica di suspence ed anche un po' di paura sono tali che si sente la sensazione del batticuore che spinge il lettore a fare ''presto'', capire cosa stia succedendo e dare risposte a quegli interrogativi.
Questo è un viaggio nella psiche umana, e non è così semplice comprenderne le diverse sfumature.
