Not so much a who-done-it as a why-done-it. Good read.

3.5 ⭐⭐⭐

Kim Yu-jin wakes up to a familiar, but strong, metallic smell of blood. To him it instantly means that he is about to have a seizure. The 25-year-old man soon finds that it doesn’t just mean that. Yu-Jin wakes up to find his murdered mother and all the evidence pointing towards him as her killer, albeit no memory of the previous night. He will now have to piece the evidences together to find out what had happened in his house before anyone else does.

The Good Son is a brilliant Korean psychological thriller written by You-jeong Jeong and translated to English by Chi- Young Kim.

The Good Son is an edgy and unnerving read. Not entirely unpredictable or shocking, but I felt the nervousness I feel the night before I have to catch an early flight and I’m packed, but I sense I’m overlooking something important. Throughout the book I kept feeling uneasy like I’m missing something terribly important. I guess nobody writes eerie psychological thrillers like seasoned Korean writers. I will definitely pick up one of You-jeong Jeong’s next thrillers, but not so soon.

Tense and nerve-wracking! I loved it!

Guys, I made a big mistake. Huge.

I was still reading a certain book, but this copy of The Good Son by You-Jeong Jeong arrived and instead of giving it my customary hug to welcome it home and shelving it to read later (much later!), I sat down to give the first chapter a read.

A young man wakes up one morning after a night of drinking, to the smell of blood. He finds his mother’s body at the bottom of the stairs and finds that he can’t remember what happened the night before. What happened to mom? Why is he bloody from head to toe?

What follows is a twisty turny ride and once you reach a certain point, you realize there’s no going back. Incredible storytelling and a satisfying, if unsettling conclusion.
