The Ninth Star is an imaginative mix of historical fiction, romance, and fantasy. Manon lives in Canada during the Napoleonic Wars and amid growing concerns that the Americans may launch an attack. Although she lives in a patriarchal society, Manon rejects the notion that she cannot do anything her two brothers do, and she has learned how to shoot and defend herself. I loved Manon's indominable spirit! My favorite aspect of the story was the romance between Manon and Irishman Arthur, but I imagine those who love folklore and whimsy will adore the antics of the Leprechauns. Overall, this was a fun and engaging mix of genres!
