The audiobook was fantastic! The two performers really brought all of the characters to life.

Reading/Listening I felt deeply connected with the picture-perfect descriptions I highly recommend this book to historical fiction fans. Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro grow up as the best of friends despite their differences. These three young people grow up during these trying times, and while we see them coming of age, this story is so much more.

Lisa Scottoline flow of writing and description of every piece of detail is amazing. I learned so much from this novel through the three characters and their families’. I learned about the impact of fascism and Naziism on the Italian Jews in Rome’s Jewish ghetto. I had no idea that the Jewish Ghetto in Rome was the oldest living Jewish community in Western Civilization.

Love, History, Friendship and Tears sums up this story

I don’t say this unless I mean it.
This book will stay with me forever.

Beautifully written book about a terrible time in history. 3 friends, Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro, have grown up together and have a special love between them. As the story develops, Mussolini and fascism are taking over Italy, dividing families, uprooting Jews, and involving the country in war. Throughout it all, the love between the friends remains strong. Each boy professes their love for Elisabetta, but she initially wavers before making her choice. As the story goes on, her love develops, but the war and the Nazis have other plans.
I loved this story, I loved the friendship between the three, I loved their honesty and sacrifices for each other. This is a terrific and heartfelt novel.

Great storytelling but it is almost 20 hours long. I feel like the story could have been told just as effectively in half the time.

Really enjoyed this book once I got into it. A great mix of history and romance.
