Slow to start and drawn out tbroughout. Lots of details on Italian life just before, during and after the war and too many points of view. If it'd been a bit more concise, it would've been a better book but still worth a read.

I can’t help but notice the inspiration between the novel and the true story of Gino Bartali. If this is the case, it’s a disgrace to the real hero.

I rate simply: 5 = liked it, 3 = meh, and 1 = didn't like it.

I am a sucker for WWII books. This was a great one. I love how detailed and in depth the story was. The characters came so alive I smiled and hoped and cried with them. I haven’t read much about the war in Italy, so I enjoyed this perspective of the story there. Loved it.

Would give this 4.5 stars if I could. I really cared about all the characters and flew through this wanting to know how everyone’s stories would end. Half a star lost for some dumb teenage love triangle moments and a spate of soap opera-level dramatic deaths towards the end.

Also, I have read a LOT of WWII novels, but the majority have been set in Germany/France/England, so reading this made me realize how little I actually know about Italy’s Fascist history.

Painful, violent, touching, tightly constructed, insightful into a period so relevant today.

It started off a bit slow for me, but I am so glad I stuck with it. I loved it!

Highly recommend. I love historical fiction, especially when it’s well researched. And, of course, has a “cannot put it down” story.

Stunning, mesmerising book. Loved this truly wonderful but heartbreaking story of Rome during WW2. I was lost in the story and learned so much. Highly recommended
