This was a better book than the first. It introduced a new enemy that is otherworldly which was exciting. There was good character development and new conflicts. Some of the political conflict is hard to follow or be invested in when there is such good physical conflict happening. The next book will be exciting.

I really like these books so far. I love stories that copy the society/structure of the Roman Empire (like Red Rising) and I also love books with clever characters that can figure out complicated plots and schemes (also like Red Rising). Tavi is a really clever character that gets pushed to the extremes of his limits. In the previous book and in this book the characters are faced with extremely dire circumstances, and that makes me keep reading.

This takes us to the Capitol where we learn what Tavi has been up to for the past two years. I still think the battle scenes are a little painfully drawn out, but there are lots of story lines to keep even the most ADD reader happy. I'm starting the third book now.

The second installment in The Codex Alera series is just as entertaining, fast-paced, witty, and well-written as the first.
