The second installment in The Codex Alera series is just as entertaining, fast-paced, witty, and well-written as the first.

Tavi continues to develop as a strong character and his ability to use his mind to overcome his limitations is inspirational.

i enjoy jim butcher as a writer and find myself enjoying these books as well. i find that the fantasy 'novel' can get a bit lengthy for my taste and often has too many characters that it is following. not too bad so far, but i worry as the series continues that the same thing will happen that happens in so many of these series "robert jordan's wheel of time" - the whole story seems to get out of control with too many characters and some sort of grand finale needed to finish it off and yet it is only a book and doesn't let off fireworks.
still, i will read on.

Tavi is now at the Academy, training to become a Cursor but still getting his butt kicked by bullies since he doesn't have the ability to furycraft. When the First Lord falls ill, it falls on Tavi to figure out a way to keep the warring factions from finding out and declaring a civil war.

I read this 10 years after reading the first one and I did not go back and read the first so it was a bit of a slow start remembering what went on. I find this series slightly trending towards YA which I usually try to point myself in the opposite direction but...it is a good couple of books. The sword battles are a bit tedious and some of the situations are somewhat too transparent but the characters are great and the main premise of success and greatness can be acheived by anyone including the magically disadvantaged is well donel.
