REVIEW: Fredrik Backman sadly, yet beautifully, takes us back to the community that has suffered major events, and it catches us up on our beloved characters two years later (Benji, Amat, Maya, Ana, Ramona, Bobo, Peter, & Kira) when a death brings them altogether. It begins with a BANG in a blizzard of a storm, and it introduces us to new characters in their rival town of Hed that we will come to love just as much. The two towns are still very much at odds, and there are even more town politics. This final book was both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, and it teaches the audience that sometimes you go through trials and tribulations alone, and some you can’t survive without those you call a community, family, and friends. I will dearly miss this series and was happy to have finished it (and the other 2 books) with @nilguin! Ich liebe dich, mein Freund!

Happy Reading!

3.5 ultimately I enjoyed this and I'm glad I finished the trilogy but this was WAY too long.

I normally really enjoy Fredrik Backman's books, but this one was not a winner for me. First off, the book is gigantic-it clocks in at 688 pages and gets to be absolutely tedious with the overwrought emotions of every single character that has ever graced the series. Just in case there weren't enough intense emotions in the first two books in the series, The Winners will hit you over the head with them.

I don't know if Backman has reached the JK Rowling stage of his career where he doesn't work with an editor, but you could probably skip the first 500 pages of The Winners and not miss anything plot-wise. The book also falls into the overplayed trope of
Spoiler Bury your Gays by killing off the only gay character in the series just to make sure you really understand that people are both bad and good and complicated.

“This hurts too much to touch with words.”

I don't think Backman wants anyone to be happy, like ever. Overall, this entire trilogy seems to make a compelling argument that small towns are bad and should not exist.
