dark emotional hopeful sad tense slow-paced

I cried through my entire reread of this series, and I will cry the next time, too.

I devoured Beartown and Us Against You, and was eager to devour The Winners. It did have a sense of finality, but it was more of a slog than the others - while beautifully written and filled with observant truths about life I’ve never been able to put into words, I don’t feel we really needed this 3rd installment.

Oh, these books! The three of them are a wild wonderful ride, one I’ll never forget!
I’m going to miss these characters always.
Fredrik Backman is so talented it’s frightening! Bang!

Reading this book was like coming home.

I alternated listening on audio and reading the hard copy. Frederik Backman is my favorite author, and I will read anything he writes forever and always.

ok. i say this as a HUGE beartown fan: i don’t think this book was very necessary or maybe shouldn’t have been as long as it is. i absolutely LOVEDDDD the first two books but this one felt kind of grueling and repetitive at times. obviously backman is still a genius and i still cried but it felt a bit superfluous. i enjoyed meeting our new cast of characters but we really didn’t need this. and if we did, because there is still great stuff in here (!), a lot could have been cut. a lot was unnecessarily drawn out for suspense. i will always love this series but it’s not a great sign that it took me this long to finish this book when i flew through the others.
