How to rate this book? It was unnecessarily long. I understand the benefit in summarizing what has happened in the two previous books: making this more accessible, so if you happen to read this book first/only or if it's just been awhile since reading, you can be caught up to speed... but man! Does it make it lengthy?! It was also pretty repetitive and there parts of the plot I didn't feel even remotely invested in. Of course, those plotlines also seemed exaggeratingly high stakes, we spent a long time with them, and then all was so quickly resolved. A tad frustrating. But I feel like I've said it before and I will say it again, no one develops characters quite like Backman. I have never cared for more people in a novel, never wanted all them to have a happy ending like I did here. Did we need this book? Probably not. But was it absolutely wonderful to catch up on some of my "friends"? And did Backman rip my heart out and leave me sobbing? Also, yes.

Never has a book broken and mended my heart so many times. Masterpiece would be an understatement - it is the most beautiful piece ever written

3.25 stars. I have a lot to say...the writing is of course, fantastic and the characters are familiar. However, this book seemed very unnecessary to me, as did the second book. "Hockey is life here" is constantly repeated and banged into our heads, especially in book three. It feels a bit manipulative; the story didn't need to be told but people will read it and people will feel sad so it is written. It's also sooooo long.

I loved every book in this trilogy; however, the end of this one broke me…

Wow. The writing is amazing. Such an amazing ending for the series.

Backman is the only author who can write a nearly 700 page novel and still have me wanting more when I get to the end. Written in his same trademark witty style this story brings together all the characters we have come to know and love (despite their quirks) and some new beautifully flawed ones too. Within the first few pages you already know that a beloved character will not be with us by the end of the story, yet Backman takes us back to the start and we soldier through to see how things will play out. When a beloved Beartown community member passes away the residents come from far and wide to pay their respects and rediscover how they can fit together. Hockey season is just around the corner and Beartown and Hed must figure out how their teams will play and we get to see many of the precious hockey players navigate the new season with all the twists it brings. Readers never know where the page turn will take them, it could be more foreshadowing, it could be the present day, or it could present more of the backstory to explain the current situation, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat guessing how the pieces will fit together. Beautifully written, insightful commentary about the world woven through, and all around another A+ story. My heart is sad knowing there isn’t another installment for me to read about some of my favorite characters.
