Künstlerisch ausgezeichnet, bin ich, was die Story angeht, nicht sicher, ob ich hier beim ersten Lesen zu viel übersehen habe oder ob sie tatsächlich eher dünn ist.

This wasn't what I expected.

If you've read the Sandman Series, at the end of it, the lead character goes through a metamorphosis and becomes something newer.  This overture goes back to right before the events that started the Sandman series and shows how he was able to get captured and be that vulnerable.

It's a great read and the art really does a great job of matching the originals while updating it. We get more of some of Dream's family including his parents. I liked revisiting these characters and seeing them again. It was fun to go back and it was done thoughtfully and felt fresh.

The art is beautiful, but the story is rather stale. Some dialogue is really clunky and took me out of the narrative. Really not quite the same as the previous volumes.

This was my introduction to the Sandman series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've only read one of Gaiman's novels (The Ocean at the End of the Lane) and LOVED it, so I was very excited to see what his writing could do in what is becoming my favorite literary format- the comic / graphic novel. I was so pleased with this story, and I can't wait to pick up the older issues of Sandman.

However, the best parts of Overture are the artwork, coloring, and lettering. After I finished the actual story, I had to read all of the bonus content to get an idea for how the artists developed each page. I've never seen comic art this psychedelic and beautiful. Sometimes I had to just lay the book out and let my eyes wander over the page to pick up every last face and symbol and color.

All in all, this comic deserves five stars. Easily.

I think I'm going to take the time now to talk about the entire Sandman Saga instead of just the overture. Cause, (1) how can you talk about the overture without talking about the rest of the Sandman Story? and (2) I personally think it's easier than to review all the (14!!!) volumes separately.

Now that that's said, I don't really know where to start. What is The Sandman? What does it mean to me? Well, let's start smaller shall we... I'm really new to this story. I read the first two volumes before I watched the show and then I read the rest. I've been reading these volumes for almost a month at this point and it's been consuming my life since I finished that first volume. And now that's it's over I don't really know what to do. How do you move on after a story like The Sandman? The Sandman is, to put it simply, a story about stories and if you know me then you'll now that those are my favorite kinds of stories to consume. The Sandman is a big story, or maybe a better word would be vast. Seeing all of the different stories withing The Sandman come together and weave such an enchanting and magical narrative has been such a pleasure for me these last few weeks. To be apart of such a journey with these characters is something I'll think about, hopefully, for years to come. This is truly unlike any story I've ever read before.

aaaaand yeah that's all I can think of to say at this point but I'm probably gonna come back and add to this later cause my brain is literally mush right now. I literally just finished this volume and Idk what to do or say lol

A fantastic conclusion to The Sandman series, one that makes me want to reread the whole series. Seeing the cosmic scale of this adventure of Dream (and especially it being the Dream that we grew to care about throughout the series, not the Daniel-Dream from Sandman Volume 10) and the sheer grandeur and absurdity made this work in a fantastic manner, turning the entire series into one cohesive whole.
