This book gets a lot of hate due to its controversial topic. Personally, I felt it did a good job in exploring the intricacies of domestic violence and why women may be compelled to stay in these situations. It's easy to cast judgement when you haven't walked a mile in another's shoes.

There was a lot of hype around this book and sadly it didn’t live up to it for me. While I didn’t hate the book, I found it very triggering and probably not something I would read again.
I did enjoy the character development and the fact the story moved between past and present, painting a full character picture. I also appreciated that Colleen described at the end that her mum had been through this situation and she wanted to write a book about it, showing how easy it can occur.
For me it was emotional and so well written, I cried a lot! I am intrigued to read the sequel, despite not wanting to read this again

Spoiler

One thing I didn’t like was that the main character seemed to decide she was leaving the abusive relationship and then did just that, and he didn’t even fight it. While this might be some people’s experience, it certainly wasn’t mine. The perpetrator kept calling and apologising and is just plan good at what they do, relying on that love to grab you back.

I wasn't planning on reading this book, but between a free copy and the film releasing, I was curious about it. I heard it was somewhat controversial and didn't know what to expect.

I found the writing style easy to read, though it was a little simple and informal for my taste. There were moments where the prose was cliche and corny, though I felt the good intentions of it were there. While an important feature, the use of Ellen Degeneres and Finding Nemo felt a bit dated for today’s readers and I wonder how they addressed this in the film adaptation. And on the topic of Ellen, the letters were a bit long at times and had me yearning to get back to the present timeline.

I appreciated the
slow burn of Lily and Ryle in terms of the abuse. Spending much of the novel first exploring their relationship and their love for each other made it so that when he did start to harm her, you could feel her internal conflict.

It Ends with Us is not a book I would usually read, but I am content that I did. The depiction of domestic violence was enlightening to me and gave me some perspective for those in similar situations.
