Many plot twists! The plot was alive the entire time, and the micro-lessons throughout were inspirational. Lilly and Atlas are both admirable characters, with incredible strength. Alyssa was also uplifting and encouraging.

The story itself is well written and I wanted to find out what would happen. However, it was hard to read due to many difficult things that were mentioned during it. See my content warnings. There were a few good parts but the bad overrides it.

What an incredibly challenging book. When I started to read it, I felt as though it would be 5 stars. But when I got to the plot, I hated it. Then I loved it. I now have an immensely complicated relationship with this book. I think what ultimately kept me from 5 starring it, though it might very well deserve it, was the concept that abuse ends within a generation. Like you do better for your kids than what you had but I think it's important that it stop amongst those who don't have kids. The cycle of trauma and abuse can not be transferred partner to partner and that is an important part, not just stopping generational trauma.

At first, when I finished reading the book, I loved it. However, the more I thought about the book and the themes within, it was a little unsettling. Please read any TWs before reading. It does have a few redeeming qualities, but it was not for me.

To start off this is not the kind of book I usually read, I read it on the recommendation of friends so I went into it trying to be open minded since I've heard lots of mixed things about Colleen Hoover. I finished it because it was an easy read but overall did not enjoy it and won't be reading this author again. For something the is marketed as a romance I was not expecting the copious amounts of abuse that take place. The one thing this book did decently was to show how someone might fall into an abusive relationship in the first place, but everything else was not enjoyable or even something I would recommend to someone else.
