What a wonderfully imaginative story! Inspired by traditional Norse mythology, Gaiman has crafted a magical story of a young boy and how he helps the gods regain their city. Odd – yes, that’s his name as well as a description – has had pretty bad luck in life. His father died at sea, his leg was crushed by a falling tree, and his mother’s new husband doesn’t like him. So Odd steals away in the night and goes to his father’s old woodcutting hut. But his solitude is quickly invaded by a fox, a bear and an eagle. They are gods who have been transformed into animals and banished from their home by the Frost Giant. If Odd can’t help them regain their land, Spring will never come (for the Frost Giants likes it to be cold), and all the people will die.
I was enchanted and completely entertained by this inventive story. Odd is brave and smart, curious and kind, adventurous and tender. I’d love to read more stories about him.

The kids and I LOVED this story and the illustrations. Wonderful companion read as we study Norse culture and mythology.

A lovely little adventure featuring all my favorite mythological creatures!
A pleasantly layered short novel in the vein of myths of yore. The talking animal-gods grated on my nerves, but I liked that Odd is such an imperturbable character: you think you can figure him out, but you'll never be fully sure of your theories, and that uncertainty is quite attractive. [EDITED 1/21/14] In fact, Odd's--and the narration's--imperturbability is likely what made this book more challenging to some of my EL410 students, despite its short length and larger font, and despite the fact that said students actually did well with the longer and more difficult [b:The Maze of Bones|2921082|The Maze of Bones (The 39 Clues, #1)|Rick Riordan|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1385117877s/2921082.jpg|2948317]. You're never quite sure what Odd's thinking, because the narration purposely obscures his thoughts from us. This definitely meant that some of my students had more difficulty getting a handle on Odd's character, and his motivations, etc.
