An interesting take on Norse Mythology. Would be a great introduction to the themes and logic of those tales. Love Chris Riddell's illustrations that really add to the story

Liked this book a lot. Imaginative, thoughtful telling of a Norse-mythology-based story. The main character Odd would be a little annoying in real life, but I appreciated him in a story, and I loved the way he solved dilemmas, especially the central conflict with the Frost Giant. Also, great illustrations. Still, I couldn't quite get past the role of women in the story. All the main characters were male, and it seems women's sole worth is in being beautiful. I guess it was cool when Freya showed up at the end and did some healing/ transformation, but otherwise any time a woman showed up, it was all about her beauty. Yawn.

Excellent quick tale which Neil excells at. Odd is not overly developed but this is how fairy tales proceed. We meet some old friends in New forms, it's brisk and doesn't linger but his descriptive language is as excellent as ever.
The illustrations, however, are superlative. Just gorgeous and develop the world even further.

Another wonderfully imaginative story by Gaiman. My son and I loved this take on Viking/Norse mythology.
Gaiman does it again! "Odd and the Frost Giants" is a simple and gentle children's fairy tale, that can be equally enjoyed by adults. Twelve-year-old Odd struggles with a deformed leg and a harsh stepfather. Fleeing from his stepfather's cruelty, Odd embarks into the forest, where he meets a bear, fox, and eagle. Startling him when they begin to speak, Odd learns that they are embodiments of gods, who are on a quest to break the curse against them.
The story is brief enough and gentle enough for even younger children to enjoy it. At only two hours on audiobook, it felt like it was over in a blink, though it's robust for its length. I could happily have spent many more hours in this world.

What a delightful book! Neil Gaiman's children's stories can run from enjoyably quirky to downright terrifying, but they're always pure magic! This will be the perfect introduction into Norse mythology for my little ones and I think they'll find a hero they can really look up to in Odd. I read this via ebook, so I couldn't fully enjoy the illustrations, but I will happily buy a copy for us to put in our family library.

Short and sweet a great introduction to the mythology of the Vikings. Gaiman is in his element with a twist on the old stories. If you like any of Gaiman's children's books you will enjoy this one!!

This is an amazing little story following a viking boy named Odd, who has the ability to smile through anything. He goes on a magical adventure with a Fox, a Bear, and an Eagle. Norse mythology is a topic I am very excited to start reading. I loved Nancy Farmer's Sea of Trolls, and this book makes me all the more excited for Rick Riordan's Norse series that will be out next year.
This is a great little book for boys and girls fourth grade on up who love mythology and a hero who is more than he seems.
