Kai Ashante Wilson, onto the list of writers to look out for. This story is a historical spec-fic contemplation on diasporic loss & what else is broken when people are torn from their homes & histories.
I didn't like how the story jumped around and how you never really got a clear picture of what happened. That was probably the point, but I don't like stories like this.

Magical and horrible all at once, Wilson tells stories to make you feel and think. His style choices start out somewhat confusing but the story eventually shines through all the brighter for them.
Profunda, dura, interesante.
Poder hacer magia, pero no sabe cómo hacerlo. Estar a merced de otros todo el tiempo. Hacer parte de una minoría en tiempos violentos.
Esta novelletta lo tiene todo.
Todavía trabajando mentalmente lo de novelletta....

"The angels sometimes asked for the most shocking crimes as if they were nothing at all."
Kai Ashante Wilson is slowly but serely becoming one of my favorite authors. His stories are tragic, heartbreaking and incredible. This story had so many reflexion on discrimination and racism and the fantastical elements worked really well. As usual with his works, I'm blown away.
I am only giving it a four stars rating because I think that it could have a bit shorter. That ending though! Wow.
"Seemed like the angels could do anything."

This short story is a great mixture of lost ancestral identity with the horrors of the Reconstruction Era.
