I knew what OCD typically looked like in behaviour (e.g. excessively and compulsively cleaning your hands and home because of disturbing thoughts around germs, or checking and locking doors and windows over and over because of fears around intruders, etc), but I didn't know what the inside of the mind of a person with OCD was like. The author, through first person, takes the reader through the journey of her life with her severely anxious and repetitive and disturbing intrusive thoughts that allow her no rest until she acts on her compulsions. And we, the reader, only get to feel her relief for a brief moment in time at the completetion of one of her many compulsions, before we are back to the steady and fast stream of anxious thoughts that plague the author exhausting existence.

As someone with OCD, I was looking for resources that would encourage my healing, and this book didn’t quite fit the bill. The recollections of the author’s compulsions were more exhausting than inspiring, which is the reality of many people suffering with this disorder but not something that’s necessarily enjoyable to read.

I do commend Lily for how vulnerably and boldly she recounts her experience. OCD, like most other mental illnesses is frustratingly misunderstood and we need more conversations surrounding it.

"There are people like me. Others out there who spend their days caught in the peaks and troughs of endless thought.
I am not a freak."
This is the way I feel right now. I feel so so seen and understood, and I'm crying because it feels so good. I'm very grateful for the people out there going through those things and speaking up about it, because it makes me feel like less of a freak. <3

of course, big trigger warning for everything surrounding ocd, therapy, suicide and mental health
