The tension of this was a bit too much for me. It was a quick and engaging read, though, and I like the characters. Ben is losing sleep by fighting the nightmares of his friends. When his mother takes him to a sleep specialist, he finds that some of the monsters he's been fighting in nightmares have captured others in the Dreamworld. There's a huge backstory, so part of this feels like info dump, and the illustrations didn't do as much to support and reveal that backstory as they could have done. This was a worthy read, and solid palate cleanser between other books on my pile, but I'm not sure I'll continue the series.

Fantastical storyline. Suspenseful ending. My son and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Clearly written opening to a series for middle grades.

Quick and fun. Pre-read before handing off to kid, but needn't have worried. Yes, some scary monsters, but they are easily dealt with, and the main character is wonderful at being a good guy and hero without losing his youth.

Loved this graphic novel! Such a cool concept. The main character goes into other people's dreams and fights off the monsters...and then the dream world becomes something much bigger and more important. I can see why my students love this one! I need the sequel!

Caleb and I read this together in a quick evening. I didn't expect it to come to such an abrupt ending... I missed the fact it was "book 1."

Caleb says, "I liked it because I have a lot in common with the main character. I have crazy dreams--yeesh." He wanted to give it 4 and a quarter stars, so he rounded to 4.

Meh. Fairly generic.

A solid beginning to a series that will appeal to fans of Amulet and Star Wars comics. It's breezier than "Amulet" or "Zita," and a quicker read, but the storytelling is solid. I liked the layout very much; the illustrations are more cartoonish than subtle, but that helps keep the zombie doctors from becoming too terrifying, and fit the tone of the dialogue ("Hey, ugly! bite this!") And the text size is excellent, which will help kids follow the story more easily. (I get that font, text size, and layout are part of the artistry of the graphic novel, but sometimes clarity is sacrificed for a particular "look.") Looking forward to a sequel.

This comic sucked me in and I couldn't put it down. While the story was entertaining, I think it could've had more depth (I prefer Jason Segel's Nightmare series). Overall a great series for kids and I will definitely check out the 2nd volume.

A fun start to a new series for me. If you enjoy Amulet or Zita, then this is a good pick for you.
