I had a tough time following this audiobook. I remember liking the movie (get a clue) when I was younger, and was excited to read this. I think part of the problem for me was having quite a few characters to have to keep track of throughout the book. Maybe this one’s better for the eyes.

It was really fun... Until it wasn't.

I enjoyed the characters and the large cast. Up until the point where it started to feel overloaded and confusing. The characters are generally unique and different from each other, but some characters have so little information that they're easily forgotten and confused for other characters. Which, is sort of the point I think, but it gets frustrating when that character turns out being a rather pivotal one. And the characters are all mostly one-note, but in a book this short directed at such a young audience, that makes sense. It's unfortunate though.

That being said, I did appreciate Angela's entire character arc a lot.

The plot itself was a fun idea too, and then it also hits a point where it feels like it's just throwing things around to happen because why not, it's fun, right? Well, not entirely right.

And there were writing style quirks that definitely aren't my favorite. I got pulled out of the story several times just because the writing style was a bit annoying.

That being said, I had fun with it overall. It definitely makes me curious about similar games of inheritance stories aimed at an older audience.

I must really be in the minority here. I felt like the author was trying way too hard to be clever (and failing). Red herrings are only good if they make sense. And the datedness of the book really shines through with some pretty horrendous treatment of minorities and people with disabilities. This came recommended as a book that I could use in my 7th grade classroom, but I think that in 2019 we can do better.

My son bought this and I vaguely remember reading it as a kid. My mind needed a break from politics, so I picked it up. It was a clever and fun mystery and I enjoyed it.
