Re-read April 2023: I read this almost exactly 9 years ago but didn’t really remember it. I like Oliver’s writing style and the suspense and drama over the tasks in Panic.

Originally read April 2014: Carp is a small town where there's not much to do, so the high school students made up a game called Panic. Everyone pays in, but only the seniors compete the summer after graduation. There's always at least $50,000 at stake, but each round of the game has higher and higher risks. It starts with everyone competing jumping off of a cliff into the water below, and ends with two cars facing off in a round of chicken. Everything in between is made up by two unknown judges. Heather and her best friend Natalie are competing for the money, but Dodge, who quickly becomes their friend, is more interested in revenge. Very suspenseful story, and I'm excited to hear that it's already been optioned for a movie. I think it's going to be a great, action-packed film.

this book wasn't what I expected. I think that may be the reason why I didn't enjoy it. the characters were also boring, whiny, and I just didn't connect with them. the covers awesome though.
fast-paced

I really liked Lauren Oliver's other stories, and when I read this book, I was expecting something supernatural or dystopian-like, but what I got instead was a small town life with teenagers playing a dangerous game to win money. I felt like the plot was a little shaky. Some of it just didn't seem realistic to me. Also, I found that this was a lot more predictable than any of her other books. I also wasn't a big fan of any of the characters, not even Heather or Dodge. So I only give this one 3 stars.

I wanted so badly to like this book but I just couldn't. It bore me half to death. All the characters were either 1) extremely uninteresting or generic or 2) so superficial and annoying that I literally cringed while reading about them. I had no interest in what was going to happen next partly because it was so, so predictable. I love Lauren Oliver's other books but this one was a real miss with me. I am just happy I borrowed it from the library and didn't waste my money.

Estuve bueno, pero nada en comparación de la serie que fue buenisima.

Sarah Drew is a great narrator. Interesting concept and nice to read something like this that isn't dystopian but I mostly was just shaking my head at these kids' antics.

Thank you Lauren Oliver for getting me out of my kind of reading slump! This felt like a refreshing shower after having read The Girl On The Train, a book that kind of annoyed me which lead me to reading not so much in the month of August.
Panic is the definition of an enjoyable book! Who doesn't love near-to-death competitions? People putting themselves in terrifying positions like running over a road, in the black of the night, blindfolded with lots of cars around. Gosh, these kids really put themselves into suicide missions! But indeed it was exciting to read about!

Little too predictable and never really delved deep enough into characters back stories to develop a connection from readers to character.

Worst ending ever. Are you serious? pffft.

Dumb cover too. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything going on in the book. Ooo look here's a side view of a pretty girl with messy hair. Her life must be so horrible she has to play chicken for money......

The concept was good, Oliver could have really made something out of it IF she had created characters that anybody actually would care about. Flat. Nothing made me like anyone in this book. Too bad you really could have played with morality and just how far one is willing to go but no dice. Instead we get tigers.....
And just saying that this book gives the impression that all poor people are that way because they are lazy, drunks, or drug addicts. Not true AT all. You shouldn't write about a lifestyle chosen or not unless you know something about it. Also the writing was very..simple. Rarely any description. Simple sentences. But I can see reluctant readers willing to pick this up.

Two stars only because the main idea was good, but someone else should do something more in depth with it.
