If it's possible to get an adreneline rush by reading a book, I did. I couldn't turn the pages in Lauren Oliver's Panic fast enough.
Panic is a summer-long game played by graduating seniors that includes several challenges -- some death-defying -- they must complete for a chance to win the $67,000 prize.
Main characters Heather and Dodge have totally different reasons for playing. Heather wants the money so she can leave town, and her train wreck of a mother behind, and never look back. Dodge wants revenge for what happened to his sister during Panic two years ago.
When a person dies during one of the challenges they think the game is over, especially now that the police are paying even closer attention. But Panic goes on and includes nail-biting moments when Heather and her friend Natalie are doing their individual challenges.
The story delves into the characters' relationships with each other, their families and other people in the small Upstate New York town where they live.
All in all, Panic is an exciting, gripping story. Lauren Oliver does it again.

I really enjoyed this book, I finished it in just two days. Such an interesting look at people's different fears and everyone's different motivations and reasons for doing the things they do. I could completely picture and relate to the small town where this took place. Great characters and really exciting storyline.
I'm give it a 4 because of the ending. It was a great read.
A fun book about crazy teenagers. Some compared it to The Hunger Games but I really don't understand that comparison. This is just about teenagers acting stupid and not at all a dystopian society.
2.5 stars
This just did not work for me at all. Overall, the writing was fine but the story was just a big ole mess.

There are just too many things trying to happen in this book. Essentially 4 main characters, a shitty as hell town, boredom to the point let's risk our lives and try to fucking kill each other (for $67,000), abusive mothers, revenge, a crippled sister, a zoo of saved animals, and really it's was just too much. With all this there was little character building, a lot of whining, and just flat out gaps in the story. I felt like if this story could have focused on a couple of things, built upon those elements alone, I would have been more satisfied.
Oh well...next?

Addicting after the first few chapters. Dang. I know it's not true but seriously... What an intense (and stupid... You have to be stupid to participate) story line.
Everybody keeps trying to compare this to Hunger Games, but I'm not with that comparison; it's more Fear Factor in book form. First of all, this is not a dystopian novel. Second, two alternating viewpoints: one female, one male. Third, I honestly didn't think anyone was going to die. Anyway...I'm really sure how I felt about this one. I mean, the challenges were good, but nothing really mind blowing (Why the world is the final challenge the same thing every year? Like, everything else is varied up until the final challenge, so why make the final one the same ole stale routine?) I saw one of the plot twists from a mile away. Heather was kind of blah to me. her obsession over her old boyfriend was pretty pathetic. Dodge was just stupid--revenge is cool and all, but he didn't grow or change from that need to have it. His "love" for Nat was also confusing and lacked some sort of passion; it was just like, Oh, she's cute and dainty and I think I love her. Yeah...ok. I do like realistic bleakness of the character's lives; life for Heather and Dodge ain't been no crystal stair. It went along well with the environment of the town. I will say I wanted more from this book, though. I keep waiting for Lauren Oliver to blow me away like she did with Before I Fall, but it all seems to be falling short. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this and I definitely wouldn't re-read.
[3.5*] I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The synopsis of Panic was very intriguing, but it fell short of my expectations. It was good, but not my favorite Lauren Oliver book.
