This is a bit of a rant. Usually I write reviews in my mother language, but when I rant, I do it in English (I have no idea why). First, I want to get something out of the way, the plot of this book is interesting, the mystery is good, the battles (these are small scale) are good. I liked all of that, but I can’t give this book more than 2.5 stars. That’s because the treatment of female characters is not anywhere near good. Yes, there are several female characters, some strong and with strong personalities. This could have been really good, BUT the OBJECTIFYING of those female characters is bad, really bad. I don’t think there were many scenes with female characters in the whole book where their appearance has not been addressed and referenced in some way. Every conversation, conflict, interaction of any sorts involving female characters had some remark about long legs, or sexy lips, or cute nose, or boobs, etc. All of those remarks had ZERO contribution to the scenes. They added nothing to plot, mystery, character, anything. As a woman, through the whole book I was trying to be patient, to let it slide because I liked the story, even if those remarks made me really uncomfortable. But when it came to the main conflict of the book, the culmination of the story, I could no longer ignore it and it pissed me off. It offended me not only as a woman but also as a reader. There was the protagonist, Dresden, finally confronting the antagonists in a desperate battle and through the whole scene Butcher kept making references to a female antagonist’s boobs. Here I was trying to feel immersed in the conflict but the tension was completely undermined by the several boob descriptions. My logic thinking could not forgive that someone faced with imminent death, outnumbered, outpowered, with the lives of others also on the line would have the time and the mind to focus on the opponent’s boobs…several times.
As it is, I can’t give it a higher rating, specially since it was a disappointment for me. I really enjoyed Storm front and I was really intrigued by Fool Moon’s plot. Considering this I will continue with the series in hopes that Butcher’s writing will evolve when it comes to female characters.

#1 : Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) : 4 Stars

3.5 Stars

Pain is to be endured. It ends or it does not.

Okay, Fool Moon was fast-paced, action-packed, addictive, and thrilling but it wasn’t as good as the first book. And I’m totally okay with it not being as good because it still delivers awesome action and an entertaining dark adventure.

The book takes place months after Storm Front and it begins with Harry struggling to find work, mundane or supernatural. Things move along quickly when his expertise is needed because of a gruesome murder that has supernatural beings written all over it, with paw prints nonetheless.

It's all right to be afraid. You just don't let it stop you from doing your job

The plot is smooth and engaging, the action kept me on my toes the whole time and the stakes were higher than ever. There are some new characters that brought more to the story and there are also the characters that we met in book one as well.

My magic. That was at the heart of me. It was a manifestation of what I believed, what I lived. It came from my desire to see to it that someone stood between the darkness and the people it would devour.

In this book, we learn more about Harry Magic and the things he’s capable of doing. We also understand more the dynamic between him and Murphy and it was actually tiresome to me. These two don’t work well, at least so far. He is annoying to her, She is surprisingly incompetent in her work with like keeping away the only person who can actually help her.

I still don’t like the way Jim Butcher writes his female characters and I don’t like the abundance of the description of how female characters look. I really hope it changes in the coming books because sometimes it’s just way too much to ignore.

So there I was being strangled by a ranting, half-naked madman in the middle of the woods, with a she-werewolf dangling from a rope snare somewhere nearby

But those final chapters, they were wild and tense and so well written. I just kept reading, couldn’t take a break, and was holding my breath. It was all madness and action and thrills. I loved the climax so much. It added way more to the story than any other element.

I’m definitely going to continue with the series. The tone is brilliant, the world is rich and the main character is fascinating. I can’t wait to see what the third book has to offer.

It isn't enough to stand up and fight darkness. You've got to stand apart from it, too. You've got to be different from it
