Even though I started reading The Dresden Files expecting to dislike it and ended up enjoying the first book, I have to say that Fool Moon really blew its predecessor out of the water. The stakes were higher, the pacing was more even, and the storyline was much more enthralling. I genuinely really enjoyed this book, and it would have been an easy 5 stars if not for Harry being the chauvinist he is.

In terms of the Harry Dresden Misogyny Meter, he was slightly more bearable than the previous book. He still kept making weirdly sexual observations and wore out the descriptor "feminine," but it felt easier to ignore his remarks. Maybe I've just been desensitized to his antics. I still have hope he'll grow out of it and join us in the 21st century.

Most of the reason I loved this book is probably that I'm a bit of a werewolf nut. I thought the various lores surrounding the werewolves in this book were really interesting, and trying to understand them while watching the different factions go at each other was a lot of fun. I also really liked having Harry as the narrator for the events of this book, since I thought he brought a good amount of emotional insight and humanity with his narration.

After listening to Storm Front on audiobook, I had an idea of the sexist portrayals of female characters that would be in this, but this book somehow made them worse. So much so that I hated several female characters because of how the male author wrote them. The female cop is described as capable, but she perpetually won't listen to the main character who is doing so much to help her. She gets in his way while he's trying to save the world and it makes her annoying. If she were half as capable as described, very few of her actions make sense. The reporter girlfriend somehow understands long periods of no contact and the main character rewards this by staying away from her because she saw this terrible side of him and she couldn't possibly understand his dark, brooding side. The mysterious femme fatale is perpetually naked for no reason. By the way, not exagerrating, she is randomly naked several times, for no reason other than to be naked on in front if the main character. There is a female apprentice whose sole function is to look cute and defy the main character to her doom.
However, there are other reasons I rated this book lower. At some point, the character has been shot and is brutally beaten with no time to rest or heal, but apparently there's time for his girlfriend to sensually undress him and bathe him before a big fight. Despite multiple injuries to his face, they have a passionate kiss without somehow hurting him. The actual mystery of the book is waylaid so much that the author almost has to remind everyone there was a mystery they are trying to solve through a weird exposition.
The lack of common sense, the weird pauses in the middle of action to have sensual or sexual relations, and the prevalent misogyny all made this book tough to read. I don't think I will continue with the series which is honestly a shame because it is a genuinely interesting concept. I would be really tempted to look up similar books or even fanfictionnif it skipped the lame misogyny and stuck more to the noir/fantasy world created.

I decided to continue reading the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher, which I’m glad I did! Harry Dresden returns in this book to trace down a werewolf variation, and brings his hilarious personality back on the case, though this time without his sidekick from the last book, Lieutenant Murphy. I thought this book did a good job at continuing the same themes from the first book, but I wasn’t as invested as the first book. There were some parts where I wished it would’ve “sped up” a bit, but the werewolf fight scenes were well done and I would continue reading the series (and I’m looking forward to it!).

I would definitely recommend this book in the series if you like the supernatural genre, crime solving, and fantasy.
