Jean was definitely the worst aspect of this book, dragging even the most interesting elements down with it.

“Not for me. I’m insured.”

I read this for school and had to write an informal text about my thoughts on it. Here is what I wrote:

From the author’s preface alone it is clear to see that the author made a conscious effort to make the play seem as real as possible. With characters without distinct characteristics, because that is the way real people are, they are not an archetype of a specific type of person. He made sure to have the set of the play seem as real as possible too, though with no actor talking to the audience when saying their lines, only to the other actor, as if they are having a proper conversation. Placing the furniture as if there was a wall instead of the audience makes it so that it seems more realistic again. The whole production seems to be a loud opposition to the earlier plays created. He wanted his characters to seem more like real people than characters in a play and he wanted to make sure the actors were okay too, as he did not want stage lights from below as it could hurt the actors' retinas (something I found quite impressive that he actually took into consideration as it was written in the 1800s).

Jean is an extremely confusing character. He seems like a very ‘mightier than thou’ character that really can’t keep his emotions or the emotions he portrays, especially to Julie, in check. He claims that he wanted to die for Julie, but then, literally a few pages later, denies this and says it was nothing but talk. Julie herself, at the beginning of the play, also seems like a very incoherent character emotion-wise. She runs around and drags Jean around places, claims that she loves him, and keeps dancing around with her own emotions. It's honestly very confusing to read. The energy when they talk together goes constantly from 0 to 100 back to 0 again. She claims that she loves him but the next moment she hates him. She wants to be dead, then wants to be alive again. It’s very all over the place, and the tone is very confusing. I am aware the author wanted to make believable characters and all, but by having the characters be like this, they don’t actually seem that real to me.

It also had this very specific part where Julie talks about her mother that I can’t seem to grasp, and it shows a little what this man from 1880 thought about women.
Julie mentions that her mother did not actually want to be married and have a kid, but she was forced to. She then made the best out of her situation and had the men do the traditionally women’s tasks and the women do the traditionally men’s. Julie was thought to hunt and ride, and Julie seemed awfully distrought about this. I can understand not wanting to do those kinds of things because she doesn’t find them interesting, but it was made clear that it was because they weren’t “ladylike” and that’s why she didn’t like doing it. I shouldn’t have expected anything better from a 1800s man, but still.

Read "Freule Julie". Ridiculous play. Fucking sexist prick. Ludicrous understanding of class struggle. Upper class nonsense.
