Read for Theatre History.

An interesting plot, but it's shocking to me how much August Strindberg hated women. It's clear he thinks Miss Julie is weak, but his focus on her means she becomes a strong female character (in the sense that she propels her own story.) She's the most interesting character here, but she's so reviled by the text that the play itself becomes weak for me.

Not one of my favourite plays, but I did find the sort of "S&M" relationship between the two characters at the forefront of the play really interesting to read about.

Oh what to say about this play? It's ridiculously insulting to women which wasn't fun. Also I couldn't stand a single one of the 3 characters. So all in all not a great read. I understand why it's a classic because of the history. But I'm not sure why anyone would really want to perform this anymore today.

I just couldn't get over how horrible both the characters were and how sexist they are.
