Really enjoyed this one. A bit too “happily ever after”, perhaps, but I loved the societal questions it examined and of course the nonbinary main characters. The day we can live in a world where no one questions gender identity regardless of physical appearance, or sexual orientation based on gender identity, is a lovely dream that it was nice to live in for awhile in this book.
Graphic: Chronic illness, Xenophobia, and Pregnancy

I feel like if this book had been a movie or a tv series, my rating would have been much higher. The author goes immediately into the story expecting the reader to understand exactly what is happening. There is some description but the book is so wordy that it can be hard to follow. The plot also seemed like it took forever to take off. Then once it did it would slow down again with wordy filler chapters. And those filler chapters were just a lot of whining from the characters. Like Kaliyu’s hatred for humans and Vaha’s constant dwelling on zir maker’s expectationsI genuinely almost didn’t finish. The last quarter of the book really saved it for me. Once loose ends started to wrap up, basically as soon as Jaya was able to get back to the Primary to try and save the project , the plot started to pick back up again and wrapped up in a nice little bow.
Moderate: Chronic illness, Pregnancy, Abandonment, and Injury/Injury detail
