Offers a very unique perspective on the events and aftermath of the Trojan War, from the perspective of some of the more notable female characters - Helen, Penelope, Hera, Cassandra, Clytemnestra, etc.

This was beautiful! I really like these feminist retellings of Greek mythology, and giving voices to the women. This one was interesting and included stories from so many women during the Trojan war, and I liked the interconnecting and layered storytelling aspect.

Why did this have to be so sad.

Honestly a better book for that, because women in Greek mythology = tragedy like 99% of the time. A Thousand Ships enriches their narrative but does not soften, does not flatter. Their stories are told so unflinchingly it would almost feel cold, but to me, this feels appropriate. As if they are being propelled into the ranks of their immortalized male counterparts.

I do think sometimes the creative liberties taken in the storytelling are a little excessive and make the book feel unpolished, but give me retellings of fringe female characters any day and I'll eat it up.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I don't know much about Greek mythology and I found this writing and structure easy to digest.
