I was NOT expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I assumed (something that I should never do) after reading Song of Achilles and Circe that this was a hanger-on, following a fashionable trend of novels taking place in ancient times, so my expectations were not high. I could not have been more wrong.

This book is GREAT. The women in the ancient Greek stories are given short shrift, and in this work, Natalie Haynes brings them front and center in a series of short narratives and tells their stories from any and all perspectives: winner, loser, god, mortal. She plays on every emotion: the fickleness and fragile ego of the gods, the humiliation of defeat, sorrow and mourning, celebration and triumph. There's even comedy relief in the form of Penelope's sarcastic and mocking frustration with the ridiculous extended adventures of her "heroic" husband Odysseus. I remember reading The Odyssey in high school. Oh, what hero Homer made him out to be. Under closer scrutiny, Penelope makes him sound like a bit of an asshole, and it's hilarious. The audiobook, narrated by the author, perfectly captures the emotional tone of each tale.

This was one of those books where I wish it didn't end. 5 stars.

I found it incredibly realistic that the women in this novel didn't necessarily realize that some of their thoughts and belief patterns about themselves and about other women were because of the patriarchy they are under.

It took a little while to get into the structure of the book - the chapters switch between different women affected by the Trojan War - but it built momentum by the halfway point. There are moments of humor to lighten the tragedies described.

this was a great retelling of the trojan war/post-war events. it was easy to keep all the different characters in your mind and you switched from different perspectives. i liked the non-linear format of the story and Calliope's hard hitting sentences about the impact of war (lots of parts underlined). i liked that helen wasn't protrayed as the evil woman. just an overall great read.

This book is a beautiful retelling of the Trojan war from the women's perspective.  It is a very unique retelling, and I love that the author took the time to write a book that left out all the stories we don't normally get in history. This is one of the few books where I recommend reading the afterword. It is short, and packed with information about how and why this book exists.

I did love this book. given that the women weren't actively fighting the battles, it means that the stories are more disjointed, so it almost feels like short stories put together.  It all does come together in the end. It is beautifully written. You can feel the wrath, pain, and intensity through these stories.

If you love retellings, this is a must read for a new take on a traditional story.
