Willam Golding is a D-1 yapper. I read this book in my english class and if it weren't for my teacher, I genuinely wouldn't understand what is going on. He tries to be very descriptive but it ends up just being nonsense. (it could just be a British literature thing idk) I really like the ending of the book, however, it gives me something to think about, and the characters show many flaws and it is quite realistic for how children would reacted in a situation similar to this. The book is in third person pov, which isn't what I like, but that doesn't mean it was a bad story.

I can see why this book is called a classic, however it really shouldn't be. The ideas and themes that Golding tries to explore are interesting, but that is the only good thing I can say. The writing is clunky and at times incoherent. The character development is sloppy and predictable. It has aged very badly, it's extremely racist and full of colonial ideas of the "savagery" of indigenous/native people. Rather than reflecting the state of humanity, the book merely highlights the problems in William Golding himself.

I managed to go into The Lord of the Flies completely unspoiled, save for the presence of the conch. I had no idea that it was set in a near-future post-apocalyptic scenario, and immediately went to Wikipedia to get much-needed context for when it was written (and was interested to find out that it was written/conceived as a parody of adventure books).

The story is simple but powerful, the symbolism whacks you over the head, and the growing despair and bewilderment felt through Ralph and his allies is fantastically written. I could have done without the lengthy descriptions of the environment.
