For me this isn't in the same tier as Memory & Dream(the only other De Lint I have read) but still did have very high highs. I think he just has a great strength for making you see the sense of wonder in the world, really good at non manipulative emotional impact.
I will say I think some of his dialogue can be a touch stilted, and that some of the stories in the middle were a little middling. But the last few closed incredibly strongly.
8.3/10

This is the second collection stories that I have read from Mr. de Lint and I enjoyed it almost as much as the first one. This book is the first collection of his urban fantasy Newford stories and introduces us to a number of characters that will appear again and again over the years. The thing I like about them is that somehow they ooze with a sort of truth that is hard to find in a lot of fantasy. Makes you go hmmm..... ;-) So now I am going to read them in chronological order. And since he has been writing them for almost 30 years now, I have a LOT to look forward to! Life is good!

This author was great--very imaginative and I loved his style. The problem with this book was that it was short stories, which I hate. Some of these short stories I would like to have read in novel form.
Reminded me very much of Neil Gaiman in a good way, partially because of all the awesome 90's talk ("bod", a girl describing her yellow jeans and red hightops, etc). I can't choose a favorite, because there were at least four that I liked very much, including one about a mermaid. Mermaids are my soft spot, particularly when the story involves a mermaid just like Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid.

Reading this collection of stories is like a balm for the soul. The real magic that de Lint presents us with is the magic of human connection and belief that healing is possible. The night may be dark and full of terrors, but there is love, and hope, and light as well.
