Great sequel and continuation of the story. This time the story takes place almost entirely on an alien planet. Looking forward to the third book in the trilogy.

Well they finally made it to the alien planet, and that alone made this marginally better than the first installment. The cast of characters got a little bloated, and the reveal at the end was not all that surprising, but the action and intrigue kept me entertained for a few hours. On to book 3!

It took me a while to get into this - I'd forgotten how the previous book ended, and this one jumps in in the middle of a scene, but once I was back in the world that Reintgen has created, I was hooked.

Emmett is a neat character, although the 'evil corporation' line was a BIT heavy handed.

Yo leyendo Nyxia:

Nyxia left us with several questions and a giant cliffhanger, and Nyxia Unleashed picks up right where we left off. Our favorite characters have to navigate a strange new alien world in this addition to the Nyxia Triad series, along with trying to figure out Babel’s master plan for them and the alien species that call the planet they just landed on home. Babel always seems to be five steps ahead of every plan the group tries to concoct, and mining for the nyxia they were sent down to the planet to retrieve proves much more dangerous than they thought possible. Emmett and the rest try everything in their power to figure out Babel’s next move, but will it be enough? And what do these aliens called Adamites really want with them?

So, what made this second book in the series even better than the first? Well, several things, one of which is the characters themselves. Our lead hero, Emmett, has to overcome several trying situations and moral dilemmas in this book which helped keep the plot moving forward and interesting. The author also allows us inside the minds of several other characters in Nyxia Unleashed, which helped the reader feel even more immersed in the story than they already were. Another thing would be the world building. While Nyxia was set aboard a ship hurtling through space, which left us with little choice but to roam the same halls and see the same things, its sequel is set on a lush, dangerous alien planet. The way Reintgen described the world and its people was breathtaking and lyrical. Creatures and people leapt off the page and the culture of the Adamites was intriguing. The reader never feels like too much information is being dumped on them at once, rather that they are introduced to the Adamite’s world as easily and thoughtfully as if they were the characters themselves. Nyxia Unleashed also does a wonderful job of celebrating diversity in literature, just as Nyxia did. It’s just all around fun, immersive science fiction and its quickly making its way to the top of my personal list of favorite series. Watch out, though, because Nyxia Unleashed ends with another gut-wrenching, throw-your-book-against-the-nearest-wall cliffhanger. (But please don’t throw your book. Throw a pillow instead and save the book from harm.) Readers will be clamoring for the third book soon after they finish this second book, I’m sure!

Thank you to Crown Books for Young Readers, NetGalley, and Scott Reintgen for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review!

Holy shit, Holy shit, Holy shit!!!! I love this series so much!! I neeed the third book and this one hasn’t even come out yet! God, where’s a time machine when you need it!! This book is so fast. If you don’t watch it you’ll read the whole thing and won’t know what to do with yourself afterwards! What a cliff hanger!!!

** I received a free ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. **

I was so excited to receive an ARC of this book because I really enjoyed the first book, Nyxia. However, this book starts off a lot slower and didn’t pull me in until about 50%. The story line definitely picks up, but it’s not enough for me to rate the book more than 3 stars. I still enjoyed Emmett as the main character and liked to see the developing relationships between him and the other members of Genesis. I just felt that a large chunk of the beginning of the book was: mining for nyxia, badmouthing Babel, repeat. It was redundant to me and caused major issues with trying to get into this book.

This book was odd for me. I feel similar to it that I did the first book. It felt somehow long winded but also incomplete. The world building/descriptions could use some work and the aliens were wildly unimaginative. After a while, they just seemed shockingly human.

Though we mostly stick with Emmett, we get a few different perspectives this time around. I honestly wish this book was 100% about badass Morning and I also simultaneously wish she had a different name.

The ending of this one was still cliffhanger-y but nowhere near as compelling as the cliffhanger of the first book. I’ll definitely read the next one because it’s an easy to read, action filled story. What it lacks in depth, it makes up for in action.

Let me start by saying I liked this one. I don’t think I liked it more than the last book, my gut reaction is a 3.5. But I also DO think I liked it more than the last book because we aren’t in routine simulations anymore and there is so much more to see and learn. It was so great to finally get down to business on the planet surface, see some relationships grow and twist and burn and rage and...damn. Getting answers to the fallout of the final chapters was more painful than I imagined. But mix that with a new world to explore, lots a monsters and aliens, a healthy dash of shade and political intrigue, and this was pretty darn good for a centerpiece of a trilogy.

The next book is going to be the true test of how I feel about the whole series. I sort of wish it were here already. That next cover is glorious! And I think the author has such a great handle on the plot and all the twists and surprises that we will be in for a delicious finale. So 4 stars it is! Can’t wait for the next one!

I am so upset right now.

Spoilers below!

BALOU! NOOOOO! (I listened to the book so my apologies if anything is misspelled for names)
He deserved the absolute world and I am so upset. And towards the end of the book Emmett sees Kaya?! Is it really her?! And then right at the end there is a genesis 13 and 14!? What in the hell is going on here! I have to find out NOW! This is such an amazing and engaging read/listen!
