This is extremely readable. It took me over and made it difficult for me to get other things done because I was so hooked. That said, it's not great literature. Galbraith (aka JKR as we all know) writes in an old-fashioned, clumsy style. She pays too much attention to how people look. She uses too many adverbs. There are no great truths and not much atmosphere. There's not much story, she misses when she strives for emotional depth and there is too much repetition.

That's all the criticism out of the way. Now I can forgive myself for loving it. The 'whodunit' element was perfect. I didn't have a clue until the reveal. The suspects were all wonderful, memorable characters and the detective and his friends and helpers are all very well-rounded, likeable people. She uses details like his prosthetic leg and the snowy winter of 2010 consistently and in ways which make the tale memorably unique.

She writes a damn fine page-turner. Despite a way less sympathetic victim than the first book and a much darker premise, it was just as compelling. By the end, I could not put it down. And the characters are really well-drawn. I'm looking forward to #3.

Characterisation was a bit more of the same & very laboured in places.

very self-indulgent writing. Inconsequential and overly complicated.

A gripping mystery that blends sharp wit, vivid characters, and a sinister plot. Cormoran Strike is at his best—clever, relentless, and deeply human. This book pulls you into the dark underbelly of publishing and doesn’t let go. An absolute page-turner!  It also makes you want to go out and start the next in the series.
