I wish you were able to award partial stars - I would have given it 4.5 or even 4.75. It was quite a good read, but a hair overlong in my opinion and its forced vaguesness towards the two-thirds mark was frustrating. Yes it kept me wanting to know 'whodunnit' but the perspective of the characters was such that Strike wouldn't think in vague statements in his head or to Robin and the veil for the readers benefit only frustrated me. I feel Cuckoos Calling was a better book but this was certainly not a bad showing from J.K.R.

I think I'm losing interest in the detective/police genre. The narrative wasn't all that intriguing and I'd prefer something with more forensic science. So the rating is more a reflection of my personal taste than of the book.

Steady pace from the very beginning with short chapters so I unintentionally read the whole thing in a day, unlike Cuckoo's Calling which I almost gave up on multiple times. As much as I loved the fantasy world of the HP series, adult mysteries are definitely where her talents lie (The Casual Vacancy already proved that though). The various side characters were well-written and I appreciated the background presence of some side plots (at most, a page or two every few chapters) to give reprieve from the main plot and help develop the characters who will presumably be seen again and again in the next 6 (or more?) books of the series.

Oh man, I LOVE these books. I’d call them a guilty pleasure except I don’t feel guilty about it at all. I know this one is controversial, and it definitely does make one nauseous at points, but all the side characters are just incredible. It’s satisfying to know that the author has all this inside knowledge about the publishing world - and THIS is the novel it inspires. Utterly tweaked. And she does such a good job with Strike, who is in many ways chronically unlikeable, yet redeemed at every turn by his integrity, and efforts to do the right thing. Sure, the plot is interrupted every few pages by characters ordering food, making tea, etc., but to be honest I love this world and I love spending time in it, even in the mundane moments. A triumph.

Much more gory and intense than the first book... I just really like Strike and Robin and want to read more about them

I can't say that this book is slow, because there is stuff that happens throughout and it defiantly kept me guessing at who did the crime. I am wondering if this series is always going to be Strike showing up the Met, so I will have to see what the third one holds. All the action was crammed in fast to the end, but I guess once you know who did it, does it need to drag on?
