I have read just about everything Michael Connelly has written so I was excited that he was coming out with something from a new detective.
I think that this series has a lot of potential but I don't think this one was quite firing on all cylinders for me.
I liked the setting of the island of Catalina a lot, and I think that will be a real highlight moving forward. I did like Detective Stilwell but I do think a bit more work needs to be done to flesh out his character a little more. I'm also not sure how I felt about his relationship with Tash, I found her a bit annoying if I'm honest.
The mystery in this one was also very predictable, but big twists have never been a mainstay of Connelly's writing, so I wasn't necessarily expecting twists and turns and I do sometimes just enjoy going through the journey with the characters on just taking the steps to get a mystery solved.
I look forward to trying more books following Detective Stilwell and seeing the series/character flesh out.

Connelly scores again with his latest mystery introducing a series featuring sheriff's deputy Stillwell posted to Catalina Island after a career-retarding case. While it's a small, normally sleepy, island only busy on weekends, a body found snagged underwater in a garbage bag changed it. As per usual, Connelly balances police procedures with sharp insights into what makes people click.
