Detective Stilwell's new job running the substation on Catalina Island gets busier than usual when a body is discovered in the water. Forced to team with the very people who exiled him to this position, Stilwell won't let this unknown woman's death get swept under the rug.

Detective Stilwell is a new character for Connelly and is an interesting subject. I still don't think we learn his first name in the entire book, but he has the classic traits of a Connelly lead - tenured with a checkered past, looking to slow down but unable to let a case go unsolved. I look forward to new adventures on Catalina Island.

Stilwell, a former diver turned LA County sheriff's detective, has been exiled to Catalina Island after a run in with a colleague. Now there's trouble on the normally sleepy island, and Stil has to decide whether to risk his newfound happiness to investigate a murder that isn't his to solve. Like Connelly's Bosch novels, Nightshade is meticulously detailed and grounded in a sense of place, with a lead character who doesn't suffer fools gladly.
