This play demands two initial readings. The first for plot and conflict, the second for picking out all the major classical themes of drama, but most of all a new examination of the Oedipal complex in a male-dominated home and all the violence and power play that's inherent. It's fantastic, but I couldn't help but wish this had been an American play with more punch than a British cast would portray. The British characters are too stifled, even the dodgy ones, to play the parts in your face. I mean, who in America wears a smoking jacket and has a proper tea whilst trying to dominate the scene. A play like this should not include people having tea. It is ironic, I suppose, and that is probably the point. I would like to have seen Tennessee Williams or Eugene O'Neill write this play. I wonder how the characters would be more aggressive, more cutting in their silence. Still, this one is a classic I would love to one day see on stage.

This was so odd. I guess I’ll see if it’s better on stage.
