A satisfying survey of the Roman Empire at the height of its influence (basically the first two centuries AD). Kelly dispatches with the basic chronology in the first quarter of the book in order to focus on social and cultural topics. These include governance methods, the role of local elites, "living and dying" in the Empire, Christianity, and the accuracy of modern depictions of the Empire (e.g. in the movie "Gladiator")

Despite having read or looked at half a dozen other booklets in this series and found them all wanting, I gave this one a try, and was rewarded with a useful and interesting peek at Ancient Rome. And readable. More informative than Gibbon in its memorable conciseness. Not that you would read Gibbon for the info (except XVI-XVII).
