An interesting take on Sleeping Beauty. Being I listened to the audio book, the jumps in time would be a bit confusing, but it was very interesting and unique. It takes a while to figure out why she was in stasis, but the ugly truth comes out. I hope she writes more in this series.
Just like many others on here have mentioned, for the first 100 pages or so I thought to myself, "Ugh, this character! I just canNOT feel for her! Not connecting!" And then BAM! The author had me crying and the backstory was so strong! Absolutely recommend and just suggest slogging through the beginning as it's totally worth it at the end.
I was pleasantly surprised by this! I expected something quick and a bit saccharine, but—though it was quick—it was heartfelt. The heroine started out a broken person and we gradually learned why, while watching her heal. Teenage love played more of a role than I wanted it to, but it’s a YA book from 10 years ago—I think that was practically a requirement. The science part of the science fiction was a bit underdeveloped/unbelievable, but other than that, this was charming and compelling.
I loved this book. Love, love, loved it. :) Head over to the Book Smugglers for a real review, if you need one. Or, just give it a read yourself.
Once upon a time, there was a television series called Earth 2. It got stuck in a really bad time slot and sadly, lasted only a season. It was about a bunch of people who were colonizing a world in an attempt to heal sick children, but thier ship crashed so they had to do a wagon train to where they were suppose to be. It was actually really good (and not simply because the leader and the only doctor were both women). On E2, there was a character who was over 100 years old but he look 20s-30s because he spent a lot time in cold sleep. Until he crashed landed on the planet and couldn't go back into "storage" as it were. Many of the early episodes touched on his reaction to being out in the real world for so long (another reason why the show was good).
I thought of that series while reading this book because Anna Sheehan deals with that idea. Taking the stores of "Sleeping Beauty" Sheehan transplants it to a quasi - [a:Margaret Atwood|3472|Margaret Atwood|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1282859073p2/3472.jpg] future (slightly toned down for YA readers, but adult readers will recognize ie). Rose is yanked out of a Stasis chamber and discovers that she has awoken to a world that is not her own.
And something is trying to kill her.
It's true that Rose is rather passive in the early section of the book, but that is explained, and what comes from that is actual a good, if perhaps facile, debate about abuse, life, and choice. There is a lot more going in this book than what appears to be at first glance and that is what drags into the story and keeps you reading. The story is part debate about industry, part fairy tale, part romance, and part recovery story.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars (I think this is my default rating these days.)
Rosalinda has spent much of her life "sleeping" in a tube only to wake up some sixty years later with a lot of questions. Her parents have disappeared because of the Dark Times and she has been total control over the dominating company. I enjoyed the "sci-fi" aspects of the book, but some of the characters seemed a little flat to me. Never really connected with the main characters and the ending was really abrupt. Had potential but didn't quite snag me.
Listened to this one on audio and I kept finding myself disappointed when I would get someplace and have to get out of the car. On Sunday I kept inventing errands for myself so that I could hear more of the story. Rose's journey is incredibly compelling and the future world that is created for us here is plausible and fascinating. Plus, watching Rose grow from passive little girl to fierce survivor was absolutely thrilling. Full review forthcoming at www.slatebreakers.com.
This is a futuristic retelling of Sleeping Beauty. In many ways this was a mix of that book Across the Universe and the movie Terminator 2. lol. I'm always excited when authors are from my home state. It doesnt have a lot of redeeming literary merit but it was a great adventure! An easy read, a great escape!
