A Long, Long Sleep

I picked this up because of the review done by the Book Smugglers, and also because I love fairy tale retellings. The beginning of the book is slow. It took a while for me to get into it, but the last half just flew by. I enjoyed the author's voice, and I was glad she didn't force this into a lovey dovey unhealthy teenage romance paradigm that seems so popular.

I only had one real "complaint":
SpoilerOk, so you have this all powerful cyborg zombie thing out to kill the heroine. He's so bad ass he strikes fear into the hearts of all. Yet, our stassed out, fragile, stressed flower of a heroine manages to avoid him relatively injury free how many times? It kind of got old after the 3rd and 4th time. It made sense within the overall framework of the story, but still was repetitive.

Overall, I did really like the story and am looking forward to reading more from the author.

3.5 really. It was intriguing, part fairy tale retelling, part dystopian and part sci fi. Not necessarily my thing because I've had enough of the dystopian genre, but was intrigued by the author's interpretation of the briar rose bushes in relation to this take of the story. It was food for thought even if I didn't love the book.

In a good way, this book was not what I expected. I assumed the ending was heading in a certain direction, but nope, I was wrong! The book also brought up some issues I didn't really see coming, but I was glad they were addressed

The futuristic elements were very interesting! I loved reading about the gadgets they had. It was also very interesting to see how Rose adjusted to life after being stased for 62 years. I just kept thinking about how a person in the 50's would feel suddenly being in 2013...can you imagine? At first I found Rose to be a weak character and I didn't like her very much. There were a few of her actions that annoyed me a bit...yet I suppose that was somewhat unfair of me to think considering the huge change in her life. However, as I read on and discovered more about Rose's past, my opinion began to change of her as I found explanations for her actions. The character growth in Rose was remarkable, and it was admiring how she overcame her struggles and difficult past.

I teared up at a point in this book...I couldn't help it! The characters struggles just seemed so real and I truly pitied them.
Anyways, this was an enjoyable, exciting read and if there's a sequel, I'm definitely reading it!

Normally when I judge a book I go by the entire thing--the emotions I felt, whether I liked the characters, etc. I usually do not let the ending weigh on the rating too much...with this book, it easily knocked in down 1-1 1/2 stars in my mind--simply because there wasn't one. I was left utterly confused at the end to such a degree that I regretted reading the book at all. Everything you learn and enjoy about the first half of this book is destroyed by the second half and it is just sad that such an amazing world was ruined that way.

Up to date sleeping beauty. Loved it

When I heard about this book, I was in all honesty a little reluctant to read it. I don't know why, just something about the blurb that did not entice me fully. I looked at people's reviews and I said I'd put in my to-read.

I'm so glad I read it though. This book, a book of complete originality is encapsulating. It is written wonderfully with drama, action, suspense and romance. It has also great twists throughout the story.

Read it.

2.5.

This book was a solid 2 stars up until the last fifty or so pages. I disliked/didn't care about almost every character (especially Rosalinda, the protagonist. Ugh); the writing was cliched and mediocre at best, but mostly just bad; and I had to force myself to keep picking the book up. The so-called futuristic slang was annoying and laughable. ("Burn it! Coit!" Seriously.) But Rosalinda's situation, and to a lesser extent the dystopian world Anna Sheehan created, was original and intriguing and kept me reading. I found myself actually enjoying the book after the twists at the end. But exciting new futuristic worlds and suspenseful moments aren't enough to make a truly good book. Even a dystopian novel needs a complex plot and compelling, 3-dimensional characters.

Rose is only sixteen when she is awakened from stasis, but it is over sixty years after she was first put to sleep in the tube. Adjusting to life in the future would be a lot harder, but luckily Rose is heir to a huge corporation, which has taken care of all her needs upon waking up. She quickly starts back at High School and joins an eclectic group of friends. Among them is Bren, a handsome boy whose friendship makes Rose pine for her old (and long dead) boyfriend Xavier. But there is something else from Rose's past that has been awakened, and it is not entirely friendly.

Sleeping Beauty with robots. I totally did not expect the completely futuristic sci-fi side to this story, but it was worked pretty well. Anna Sheehan really thought through how she wanted to re-tell her fairy tale and her execution was thorough. But where I thought the dystopian future was pretty neat in the beginning, the language and world quickly became tedious to follow. Maybe it was because Rose is a fairly shallow character, thinking only of herself and whining when little annoyances happen to her. She just doesn't seem like a strong or brave character. Otto the alien was a little weird to get used to. If he can communicate with people's minds, why spend most of the book instant messaging? The further I got into this story, the more I wanted clarification on certain elements of the lifestyle and story, and my questions were never answered. Even the flashbacks to Rose and Xavier felt rather dull and insignificant. A great premise and neat idea for the future, but this book could have used a little more time in stasis.
