I found this dated and bewildering; a series of short encounters between Vatanen and assorted local ‘characters’. I couldn’t see the point of it - Vatanen didn’t seem to change because of these experiences. Definitely not my sense of humour.

Reasons why I'm happy to have picked up this book:
- On new Year's day, it has the word 'year' in its title.
- On New year's day, I have managed to start and finish it, thus taking my 2021 average to one read book per day
- On New Year's Day, it actually mentions New Year's day
- I like bunnies and baby hares
- It is set in many spots of a country I don't know much about, and about which I have read very little, and that is obviously celebrated in its own specific identity, and that actually makes you feel like giving it a go someday,
- At the same time, it has many elements reminding me of Norway, which I have been missing lately
- It has a lovely deadpan nonsense humour
- It speaks of someone taking care of someone else
- After last year, I have a burning need for escapism
- It has an interesting way to make animals and nature relevant to the plot
